Improving Client Trading Networks with A10 Networks

A10 Networks recently announced new low latency solutions designed to improve client electronic trading systems. A10 Networks low latency solutions address problems in client connection networks typically found in dark pools, prime brokerage, retail brokerage and other client application networks. Trading firms need to stay connected to their trading clients with the lowest possible latency, but since these connections typically traverse extranets, the Internet or other peering arrangements these connections generally require NAT, BGP peering, basic network security and stateful multi-site redundancy. The payloads are typically FIX messages or similar financial protocols.

At heart, A10 Networks is an Application Delivery Controller or ADC. An ADC is a 'full-stack' router in that it can make traffic routing decisions based on any data within application payload. A router or switch typically makes routing decisions up Layer 4 in the OSI Model where as a Firewall can make routing decisions up to Layer 4 and security decisions up to Layer 6 and basic Layer 7 data. The A10 Thunder ADC can make traffic routing decisions based on any information in the packet headers or within the application payload. An ADC is a full Layer 7 application router with stateful failover.

A10 Networks is a high-performance ADC that combines network routing (BGP), network security and network services (NAT) with routing based on information in the FIX messages. A10 Networks Thunder ADC's are high performance because all functions run in specialized FPGAs. By combining all of these functions into one FPGA financial providers are able to significantly reduce latency in their client peering networks. Reducing latency increases the volume of trades that can be executed and also helps firms gain a competitive advantage over slower peers.

A10 Networks combins network services, BGP, stateful multi-site redundancy and FIX message routing in under 3 microseconds. Competitors like F5 are over double the latency with significantly more jitter than A10's ultralow latency platform delivers. A10 Networks has two two ULL platforms - The TPS product line, which scales to 100Gb, and the Thunder 3745.
